Journey to Munich

Departure to Munich day.  This morning I got up and ate breakfast before finishing up some last minute packing and heading out to the Hauptbahnhof to catch our train to München.  I think about 7 of us were on the same train from Köln and we all changed trains at Würtzburg.  Corey and I transferred to the train for München from Würtzburg, Ben Zeigler and Corey Vinton went to Köttingen, and Claire Koenig and Nathan Wukie went to Nürnberg, and Justin Speer staid on the train to go the rest of the way to Passau.  We all went our separate ways, which was sad but also exciting because we’re finally going to our homes for the next six months and beginning our co-ops.

We took the ICE trains, which are incredibly fast.  At some points we were going 300 Km/hr, which is about 186 miles/hr.  It was going so fast our ears popped.  The total ride was 6 hours, during which I read almost the whole way.  Looking out the window, I could see beautiful towns tucked into the mountains.  As we got deeper and deeper into Bavaria, the hillsides and forests got more dramatic, more colorful, and more scenic.  It was really exciting and I was feeling very privileged to have gotten a job in Bayern, where there are so many interesting places to visit.

Once Corey and I got to Munich, I bought a city map for us to navigate our way to the hostel.  We made it there easily, since it was only a few blocks from the Hauptbahnhof.  Since it is a catholic hostel, we found out that there is a curfew of 12:30am, which isn’t so bad really.  Once we got checked in and set our stuff down, we went out for a walk in Marienplatz where the Rathaus (town hall) and shopping is located.  We stopped at sandwich place called Rischart’s to eat and then headed to a restaurant where we got our first Bayerisch beer here, called Hacker-Pschorr.  It was very good though I had already had it back in the states, but here it was so refreshing to have because honestly the Koelsch beer was not really that good.  The Altbeer from Duesseldorf was good, but I’m glad to be in Munich where some of the best beer in the world is made.  After that we came back to the hostel and found our 3rd roommate.  He’s from New Zealand travelling solo on vacation here in Germany.  He had already been in Berlin, was staying in München this weekend, and is on his way to Köln next, where we just came from.

After the day of traveling, we wanted to just rest for a bit and write in our blogs.  Tomorrow we’re going to get a day ticket for the trains and take a visit to the BMW dorm we’re going to be staying in starting Monday and do a little bit of sight-seeing.
